Dalhousie Famous Places: Top 5 Attractions to Visit This Season
There are many places to visit in Dalhousie, but 5 among them stand out the most. They stand out because of their stunning natural beauty, majestic wildlife, and historic appeal. Here they are:
1. Dainkund Peak Trek
A short and easy trek to the Dainkund Peak, the highest peak in Dalhousie. Known for its stunning natural and panoramic views, the Dainkund peak also houses a small temple of Pholani Devi. It’s a 4.5 km long one-way trek from Lakkar Mandi that you can complete in a time of 2-3 hours, depending on your speed. Part of the trek also has stairs to make your life easy, while the remaining part is also largely flat but slightly uneven in some places. It passes through Deodar and Pine forests, giving you a glimpse of Dalhousie’s lush greenery.
2. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary
The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best places to go for wildlife enthusiasts. Spread over a large area of 30 sq. kms., this sanctuary offers a wide range of animals like Black Bears, Barking Deers, Leopards, Serow, Pheasants, Flying Squirrel, Himalayan Fox, etc. It also offers well-laid-out trekking trails at both Khajjar and Kalatop, and it lies in the path of the Ravi River, offering excellent river views as well.
3. Beeji’s Park
Established by the Dalhousie Public School, Beeji’s Park in Dalhousie showcases war trophies won by the Army, Air Force, and Navy. Some of the items on display in this park include aircraft, tanks, torpedoes, missiles, etc. People passing by it never forget to click selfies along with the items on display here, and feel proud about the might of our nation. Many of the items on display here (i.e. tanks and aircraft) had to be dismantled in order to be transported to this point, and then they were reassembled in their original form.
4. Garam Sadak
As implied by its name, the Garam Sadak is known for its feature of getting hot during the daytime as it receives direct sunlight. It offers scenic views of Dalhousie’s natural beauty, making it perfect for a stroll with your friends or family. Adjoining two of the most popular chowks in Dalhousie, namely Gandhi and Subhash Chowk, it attracts plenty of tourists for an evening walk. Meant only for pedestrians and not for vehicles, it’s also completely secure to explore the beauty of Dalhousie.
5. St. John’s Church
The St. John’s Church in Dalhousie is one of Dalhousie’s oldest churches, built during the colonial era and offering a glimpse of British India’s architecture. However, there’s much more to it in addition to its colonial architecture. Locals believe that this church is haunted, as one can hear the whispers inside it even when no one is around, and its stained glass windows suddenly illuminate during nighttime without any external source of light.
