top 7 things to keep in mind during your jawai wildlife safari
Situated in the rocky landscape of Rajasthan, Jawai is one of the most special places on earth. It’s a place where humans, leopards, rocks, and rivers all work in perfect harmony. The granite hills and open plains of this town reveal leopards lying on the rocks as villagers continue their day to day business, unlike other sanctuaries where the animals are buried deep in forest areas. A Jawai wildlife safari, therefore, is not only about wildlife sighting but also about giving you a sneak peek into the fragile harmony of nature and the community living.
Having said that, there are certain tips you should keep in mind to ensure that your safari in Jawai is safe, enjoyable and memorable. Here are 7 of them which you must keep in mind:
#1. Visit At the Right Time
Although Jawai is open to visitors throughout the year, the best time to visit it is between October to March when it is in the safari season. The climate during this period is mild and the animals are livelier. The summers can be very hot, making long safaris unbearable. Winter has softer light and clearer skies so that even when you are after good photographs the landscape is even more striking. .
#2. Book Your Safari in Advance
Jawai is a low-key space and even the best safari areas, such as the ones featuring the well-known guides, may be booked early during safari season. Therefore, you should also try to book your Jawai wildlife safari in advance. This will help ensure the services of highly-experienced guides and well-maintained cars. Most of the premium lodges and camps conduct their safaris with naturalists who are familiar with the behavior of the wildlife. By opting to go on guided tours, you will increase your likelihood of witnessing the leopards and other wild animals.
#3. Dress Up Appropriately
Jawai has rocky and dusty ground so the clothing is important. Wear light clothing fabrics, in earth color, beige, olive or brown, to merge yourself with the landscape. Avoid vivid colors that may frighten the animals. Wear closed-toed shoes or trekking boots to ensure your feet are not dusted or thorned, especially when you will walk or take photos. And don a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as the sun is fierce in this region (even during winters).
#4. Be Wildlife and Local Community Friendly
Jawai is known for the peaceful co-existence between leopards and the Rabari herdsmen. The animals are left to roam freely and are not confined in cages hence it is important to respect their space. Do not use loud voices, abrupt movements and feeding the animals. Turn your phone off and talk in low tones. Always respect the locals in the village and by no means take their photos without authorization. Their lifestyle forms an important component of the ecosystem in Jawai; a small favor does not count much.
#5.Stay Hydrated and Pack Light
Open jeep safari rides can last for hours, so you should come prepared for them. Bring a bottle full of water to quench your thirst and keep yourself hydrated. Do not carry heavy bags, only necessities – water, camera, sunscreen, a couple of common medicines, and light snacks. Avoid taking anything more than that.
#6. Follow Safety Instructions
The guides of Jawai know the land and animals better than anyone else. Do not ignore any of their warnings or orders – stay in the car, keep distance, and snap responsible pictures. Note here that you are in leopard territory, and leopards are wild and unpredictable. Safety will save you as well as the space.
#7. Discover the Way of Life Beyond Wildlife.
A Jawai wildlife safari is not limited to the animals alone. The scenery of this region is impressive with granite rocks, old temples, and serene lakes. Relax and take in the view, interact with the Rabari tribesmen, or go to Jawai Dam, where migratory birds congregate at sunset and sunrise. These experiences will improve your overall safari experience and help you absorb the natural harmony of Jawai.
