Some places display history. Others invite you to live within it. Lotwara Fort belongs to the latter.
Set in Rajasthan’s Dausa region, this 17th-century fort carries the kind of character that modern recreations can rarely imitate. Thick stone walls, traditional architecture, open courtyards, and quiet passageways hold onto the atmosphere of another era while remaining deeply comfortable for the present-day traveller.
Lotwara is often called the Peacock Town of Rajasthan, and the description feels entirely deserved. Village paths lined with old homes, peacocks moving freely across the open landscape, and countryside untouched by the pace of larger tourist destinations create a version of Rajasthan that feels slower, quieter, and far more immersive. Peacocks are frequently visible around the fort itself, becoming a natural part of everyday life within the property.
This is not the Rajasthan of rushed sightseeing circuits. It is rural, atmospheric, and deeply connected to its surroundings, the kind of stay where heritage is not observed from a distance but experienced from within. Village walks through green fields, sacred sites, and quiet rural lanes further deepen the connection to the region’s slower and more traditional way of life.

A great stay
Recently we stayed for a night at the Lokwara Fort. It is a heritage property recently renovated and being offered as a hotel. It is a simple lovely place (not luxurious), one side with the village and other agricultural fields. The food is great, homely and well-cooked. Overall, we had a relaxed time and would recommend people to visit it.
